Pilot reports...

Great place to go for a first timer to Mexico. it is located 115 nm south of Mexicali on the mainland side of the Sea of Cortez. Since it is considered an airport of entry it is now possible to fly into Puerto Penasco (PPE) direct from any American airport as long as you file your flight plan with the US FSS. Be sure and remember to bring your aircraft registration, pilot license, birth certificate or passport, Mexican insurance. Beginning in january 1977 there will be phone connections into town for taxis (although rental cars are also available at the airport). There are a number of hotels in town ranging in price from $35-$120/night. Meals can be obtained at numerous restaurants and so far have found them to be safe for the turistas. Shopping abounds in the downtown area near the fish market (great fish, shrimp buys). Nightlife is bountiful and english is passable throughout. My recommendations for hoteles the first timer to PPE, would be the new Gloria hotel ($100) or the Playa Bonita Hotel ($60-70) both are located on one of the finest open beaches in Mexico. Tourism industry is beginning to flourish with almost all activities present.

The airport at PPE has two runways but the paved one is usually the preferred although the dirt runway may be requested. Gas is unavailable at this time but may be available in the future. Please use the unicom 122.8 for traffic advisories. Upon landing do not be intimidated by the presence of uniformed marines with automatic weapons they are merely doing what the us government is requesting and paying for! they may look menacing but are really pretty nice and DON'T be an ugly american and try to bribe them. Upon getting to leave PPE, a flight plan has to filed at the airport for the return trip.
